Description

SITUATIONAL DILEMMA · BOOK 1

20 Real-Life Family Situations for Ages 6–9

Something happens. Nobody tells you what to do.

A hug that has gone on a bit too long. A present you are not sure about, with everybody watching your face. A game that has stopped being fun for one person but not for the other. A job you have finished while everybody else is still working.

These are the moments where nobody hands a child an instruction. Situational Dilemma turns twenty of them into a book a child can colour, decide and talk about.

Every situation offers three believable choices — no silly option, no obvious villain. On several levels, two of the answers genuinely work, and the book says so. What happens next is kept at the back of the book, so the deciding has to be real.

What’s inside

  • 20 full-page colouring illustrations, one for each situation
  • 20 dilemmas with 60 A/B/C choices
  • 40 thinking questions and 20 activities, no two alike
  • The Four Corners — a simple thinking tool used before every choice
  • What Really Happens — delayed outcomes for every choice, kept at the back
  • Thinking Points, a Final Scorecard, the Style Finder and a Thinker Profile
  • A free Starter Badge plus four badges to earn at Levels 5, 10, 15 and 20
  • A Reflection page, The Real One page to do with a grown-up, Activity Answers and a Paper Plane Hunt
  • A Certificate of Situational Thinking

How each level works

Every situation takes three pages:

  • Colour the situation. A full-page illustration of the family moment. Colour it for as long as you like, and look at what is actually going on.
  • Decide. Read the situation, stand in the Four Corners, and tick A, B or C — the honest one, not the one that looks best.
  • Think it through. Two questions about the choice you just made, and one activity to do on the page, or to take off it into your actual house.

Only after all twenty does your child turn to What Really Happens to see what each choice led to.

The Four Corners

Before every choice, the child stands in four corners, one at a time:

  • What is happening?
  • What do I want?
  • What might they want?
  • What happens after?

When two of the corners disagree with each other, you have found the dilemma. That is the moment to think, not the moment to hurry.

Badges, profile and certificate

The first badge is free, just for opening the book. Four more are earned along the way. At the end, the child adds up their Thinking Points, uses the Style Finder to discover which kind of thinking they reach for first — the Noticer, the Straight Talker, the Third-Way Maker, the Stayer or the Asker — and fills in their certificate.

The profile describes a habit, not a personality. The book says so itself: your longest bar is not your best one or your worst one.

A note for grown-ups

This is not a test of whether your child is good. It is a book about judgement, and a kind, thoughtful child can still choose an answer the book scores lower — because the lower-scoring answers are the tempting ones.

Thinking Points follow the book’s own thinking framework and are explained on a page of their own. Several levels have two answers that both score full points. Families may see some situations differently from the book, and talking about why is part of the point.

Situational Dilemma is an entertainment and learning product for children aged roughly six to nine. It is not a psychological assessment, a personality test, a behaviour programme, or professional advice of any kind.

Where a grown-up is needed, the page says so.

Who it’s for

Children aged about 6–9, working on their own or alongside a grown-up. There is no time limit and no set pace — one situation an evening, four on a wet Sunday, or the whole thing over a month.
